💵 How ACH Works

Learn about how ACH works, supported locations, and the different ACH statuses a payment goes through.

🏦 What Are ACH Payments?

An Automated Clearing House (ACH) is a computer-based electronic network used to process low-value, domestic transactions between participating U.S. financial institutions. It supports:

  • ✅ Credit transfers (push payments)
  • ✅ Direct debits (pull payments)

ACH is batch-based, meaning payments are processed in groups, making it cost-effective and ideal for recurring or low-value payments.

🌍 Supported Countries

ACH processing is available only in the United States (all 50 states).

🔁 How ACH Works

ACH payments pass through multiple status stages as they move through the clearing process.

ACH StatusMeaning
PendingInitial status after the customer initiates an ACH payment.
BatchedACH system has started processing the transfer. Customer will typically see funds leave their bank account. Errors (like insufficient funds) may appear shortly after.
SettledTransaction was successful and funds have been released. Happens T+3 business days after batching.
FailedThe ACH transfer was rejected after batching by the network due to issues like insufficient funds or invalid account details.

📆 When Do ACH Payments Settle?

ACH payments settle after T+3 business days from batching.

Example: If a customer initiates a payment on Friday afternoon, and there's a holiday Monday, the transaction may not settle until Thursday.

This delay may lead to confusion since funds are not immediately available in the customer’s wallet.

🚧 ACH Settlement Delay

ACH payments take 3 business days to settle.
Approvely does not release credits, USDC, or initiate transfers until the ACH has fully cleared to prevent fraud.
